Snapchat unveils new operating system for AR spectacles

Snapchat, the popular social media app, has announced a significant step forward in its augmented reality (AR) hardware ambitions. At its annual Partner Summit, the company unveiled a slew of new consumer products and business updates.

Fifth generation of Spectacles augmented reality glasses

The latest Spectacles are only available for developers, who must commit to paying $99 a month for one full year if they want to build AR apps for the device. The glasses can produce more compelling digital visuals than the prior version and are built on top of a redesigned software operating system dubbed Snap OS, the company said.

Snap debuted its first internet-connected Spectacles glasses in 2016, pitching the $130 devices as an easy way for users to capture short, first-person videos that they could post on Snapchat.  Since then, the company has released other versions of its smart glasses, including a version for $380 in 2019.

Snap CEO Evan Spiegel envisions a future where AR glasses become as ubiquitous as smartphones and tablets today. He believes that the company’s early investments in AR software will position it as a leader in this emerging market.

‘The most developer-friendly platform in the world’

The new operating system is just one of several key announcements made at the summit. Snapchat introduced a simplified version of its app and new profile designs for creators. The company also introduced new ad placements and products, such as Sponsored Snaps and the ability for advertisers to promote places on Snap’s Map where friends can follow each others’ locations.

Additionally, the company has partnered with OpenAI to integrate its large language models into the Lens Studio, making it easier for developers to create innovative AR experiences.

Snapchat’s long-term goal is to become the most developer-friendly platform in the world. By providing developers with powerful tools and opportunities, the company hopes to attract a diverse range of creators and foster innovation.

Diversify its revenue streams

While Snapchat’s business model is currently heavily reliant on advertising, the company believes that its investments in AR could diversify its revenue streams and open up new markets.

As Snapchat continues to grow and evolve, it is clear that AR will play a central role in its future.
