Disney dominates Emmys, bolstering streaming ambitions
Disney celebrated a historic night at the 76th Emmy Awards, clinching a record-breaking 60 wins across its various platforms and studios, the most among media conglomerates.
Disney outshines media rivals
Netflix finished in second position with 24 total wins across Sunday’s ceremony and last week’s Creative Arts awards — two more than at the 75th Emmys. HBO/Max took home 14 Emmys — the lowest total for the Warner Bros. Discovery outlets (who submit as one entity for the Emmys) in more than a quarter century. Apple and NBCUniversal also reached double digits.
FX-produced programs led all platforms
Disney’s dominance was particularly evident at FX, which took home 36 awards, including a staggering 19 for the series Shōgun. The show took home the awards for best lead actor and lead actress in a drama series, with Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai becoming the first Japanese recipients in their respective categories. The Bear also did its share, taking home 11 awards, including Jeremy Allen White’s win for outstanding lead actor.
Disney’s streaming platforms collectively accounted for 59 wins, with 50 for Hulu and nine for Disney+, further solidifying the company’s position in the streaming landscape. Disney+’s Jim Henson Idea Man from secured five awards, making it the most-winning documentary of the year.
Crucial time for Disney
As Disney faces challenges with reduced theme park attendance, the strength of its streaming business becomes even more critical. CEO Bob Iger has emphasized the importance of Emmy nominations and the popularity of Disney’s content in driving subscriber growth.
Following a strong third quarter with significant subscriber gains, Disney anticipates a profitable fourth quarter for its streaming platforms. To further enhance revenue, the company is implementing price increases in October and promoting bundled offerings to reduce churn.
As Disney continues to navigate the evolving streaming landscape, the Emmys wins serve as a significant milestone, showcasing the company’s commitment to quality content and its ability to captivate audiences.
